6 July 2011 For immediate release
The UK’s best-selling hi-fi brand Cambridge Audio is excited to unveil a new technology hub based in the City of its birth – Cambridge.
Back in 1968 when the company was founded, the concept of digitised music available at the touch of a finger was simply the stuff of science fiction. But today, networked home entertainment is increasingly the way people access their music, movies, TV, radio and more. Underpinning this trend, Cambridge Audio is now developing a range of digital music platforms which answer consumers’ needs, however they rip, store or stream their music collections.
Having previously collaborated with leading digital technology developer Reciva to create its UuVol digital music platform, Cambridge Audio has now negotiated to acquire full rights to Reciva’s client source code. In addition, three of Reciva’s development team have transferred to Cambridge Audio and will be based in the company’s new Cambridge technology hub.
In the past two years, Cambridge Audio has made significant inroads into the world of music streaming – having launched the NP30 network music player and developed its own UuVol* internet portal and control apps for iPad and iPhone.
This new centre of excellence will add significant strength to Cambridge Audio’s thirty-strong Research and Development team which already includes a core team of software and mobile app developers. Ultimately, direct access to the client source code will allow Cambridge Audio to advance further and faster into the world of digital entertainment increasing its scope to create a complete portfolio of exciting and relevant products.
“Cambridge Audio is excited to be investing considerably in its development resource and what better place to be associated with than the birth place of the brand” stated Cambridge Audio’s Chief Operating Officer Peter Brown.
The company’s Technical Director Matthew Bramble added “We have been working with Reciva for a number of years towards our vision of a platform of complementary streaming technologies, but to enable us to add greater user value and individuality to our products, we felt the time was right to expand our team and bring even more development in-house”
Reciva CEO Ben Terrell commented “We are delighted to complete this deal with Cambridge Audio. Reciva will continue to support Cambridge Audio’s products with our RecivaConnect Plus (RCP) web service which allows us to offer stations lists and many audio services over a single API. RecivaConnect Plus serves customers across automotive, mobile apps, set top box and smart TV and other connected audio devices from a dedicated global array of servers managed from our Cambridge offices. The advantage of RCP is that without updating client side code, customers can add complex audio services as they emerge with only server side changes.”
*Note to editors concerning the background of UuVol:
The UuVol platform covers hardware, client (i.e. product specific) software, server software, Apps, a web portal and our iRadio service.
The name UuVol is a „twist‟ on a translation of the word „cloud‟ in Catalan which is Nuvol
It is pronounced – “you-vol”.

Reciva, the world leading Internet radio technology specialist, is delighted to announce a new era in our history with a shift in focus away from dedicated hardware to a web-based software solution; Reciva Connect Plus.
This change in direction will see us moving away from the development of hardware for Internet Radio based around our famous Barracuda and Stingray modules and moving our focus to our server side products where we can offer support for all Internet connected media streaming products. We will continue to support our key module based partners, including The Audio Partnership, Grace Digital, and Rotel, but we are not actively seeking new opportunities.
Reciva Connect Plus (RCP)
Reciva Connect Plus is a web service API that includes our massive Internet Radio Stations Directory as well as partner services from companies such as Aupeo!, MediaFly, SiriusXM, and many more. What makes RCP unique is its method of combining the many disparate partner services into a single API, dramatically reducing product development and deployment costs. RCP is already proven as it powers every Reciva module ever produced, is deployed in iPhone and Android based applications and has an imminent release on the WebOS platform. We are also working on exciting opportunities in Tablets, Hotel TV, and In-Car. With the rapidly changing landscape in hardware based, net-connected audio solutions the decision to focus on RCP gives our customers a shorter time to market and a much increased flexibility in the look and feel (UI) of any given product.
Future
We will continue to feature enhance and extend our Internet Radio database whilst adding more partner API’s, including still picture and video services. As well as streamlining the development environment, RCP makes it even easier to add net-connected audio/video to both CE and B2B products. In the future we look to offer support for emerging technologies such as CE-HTML.

As the market shifts from CD to downloaded music and streaming music services, the UK’s leading hi-fi manufacturer Cambridge Audio unveils its first in an exciting series of products to satisfy the ‘digital music generation’ who demand more from their music.
The first of these, Cambridge Audio’s new NP30 network music player, unleashes the potential of digital music stored on computers and home networks enabling premium quality 24-bit playback through any hi-fi or home entertainment system. In addition the NP30 offers fast and easy access to a wide range of streaming music services and over 20,000 Internet radio stations via its in-built UuVol Radio internet radio service.
Simple network connectivity is of course critical in this fast evolving sector and the NP30 leads the way. Using UPnP, the NP30 instantly connects to any home network via either Ethernet or 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.
For the ultimate in control, UuVol Remote – an App for the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad – enables access to all of the NP30 features and functions including network stored media, streaming services, podcasts etc. from anywhere within the home network. Housed in a compact, low resonance all-metal chassis, the NP30 is just as intuitive to use from its clear four line LCD display or supplied IR remote.
The NP30 is part of a new organic digital platform from Cambridge Audio called UuVol designed to provide all that’s required to enjoy your favourite music from multiple digital sources in the very best quality.
But of course no Cambridge Audio launch would be complete without inclusion of the brand’s legendary value. The NP30 network music player, together with its supporting UuVol Portal, UuVol Radio and UuVol Remote, offer today’s discerning consumer an easy, versatile and affordable way to unleash the full potential of their digital music, whether stored on their computer or streamed over the internet:
• Simple no-hassle playback from any UPnP equipped laptop, notebook, PC, Mac or NAS hard drive
• “Better than CD” 24-bit/96kHz playback allowing the streaming of studio quality 24-bit WAV, and FLAC downloads for an incredibly detailed musical experience
• Wireless 802.11 b/g and n plus Ethernet network connectivity built in
• UuVol portal enables:
- Over 20,000 internet radio stations
- Podcasts and “listen again” shows 24-7
- Seamlessly manages favourite streaming services like Pandora, Rhapsody, Aupeo and more for instant access without a PC
- UuVol remote App offers the ultimate in wireless control for all NP30 functions
- UuVol portal is the gateway to a world of studio master quality content
Key features and benefits of NP30 network music player and UuVol:
Enhanced network music playback and simple connectivity
Amongst the rich features of this versatile network music player, Cambridge Audio believes that most customers will first and foremost benefit from the NP30’s ability to play back digitally stored music in amazing quality.
The adoption of home networks has grown exponentially in recent years with more and more people now looking to experience their burgeoning digital music collections in higher quality. The NP30 effectively unites media choice and hi-fi quality by allowing users to enjoy music and podcasts stored on any UPnP equipped netbook / laptop / PC, Mac or NAS hard drive through their home entertainment system.
The NP30 supports a huge array of audio formats including MP3, AAC, WAV, and OGG Vorbis. What’s more, NP30 customers can experience “Better than CD” 24-bit/96kHz playback quality thanks to its ability to support uncompressed WAV and FLAC CODECs. This amazing advance makes the NP30 truly unique amongst its peers.
Of course audio performance is at the heart of everything Cambridge Audio believes in and bit-perfect signal path and jitter suppression guarantee outstanding sound quality.
Simple sharing of centrally stored music collections is a breeze; either wirelessly or by Ethernet and the NP30’s ability to connect wirelessly to home networks adds huge advantages since multiple NP30 devices can be used across the home with virtually no set-up required. Furthermore, the NP30 is compatible with ‘b’, ‘g’, and critically, the latest ‘n’ wireless standard which guarantees interruption-free wireless streaming of music files.
And just as importantly, the NP30’s compact form factor (just 8”/27cm wide!) makes it perfect for any room in the home. The NP30 has been designed with all family members in mind and its lightning quick and logical operation control guarantees the easiest possible set-up and daily operation.
Internet radio
In the past, navigating the world of Internet radio has been at times frustrating and sometimes impossible. UuVol Radio and the NP30 vastly simplify the process with a 20,000 tried-and-tested roster of stations from around the planet which are searchable by title, genre and region. Before inclusion on UuVol Radio, all stations are thoroughly tested for reliability and quality.
Favourite stations, preferences etc. can be managed via the UuVol website and from here, users can also suggest new stations which, one validated, are added to UuVol Radio for all NP30 customers to enjoy.
Uuvol Remote App
UuVol Remote is a free App which seamlessly brings together the NP30’s full functionality from any iPhone or iPad. Rather than using a traditional control point (which would only control the UPnP functionality of the NP30), UuVol Remote allows full control of the NP30 including streaming services, UuVol Radio, favourites etc.
The customisable layout allows instant switching between each source and displays album art plus full album and track information. Presets can also be added, and a queue of favourite tracks can be set which will even continue
to play if the iPhone is switched off or loses its network connection.
Streaming services support…
Music streaming services have grown at a staggering pace and one of the NP30’s key strengths lies with its ability to provide direct connection to a range of the world’s most popular streaming services without the need for a PC. With subscription and set-up management accessible from the UuVol website, subscribed services can be quickly accessed using the UuVol Remote App or the NP30’s ergonomic front panel or remote.
In North America, the NP30 ships with a range of the most popular services onboard. These include Pandora, Rhapsody, MP3Tunes and Aupeo! Additional services will continue to be added via UuVol and registered users notified. And taking note of the exponential growth of podcasts, the NP30 also allows PC-free connection to some of the world’s leading services including Podcast.com, Blog TalkRadio, Mediafly and BBC Podcasts.
From launch, the NP30 will allow users across the world access to a wide range of free and subscription based services depending on their location.
In summary the NP30 and its UuVol platform represent a breakthrough in the enjoyment of computer music. Whether playing back a download from a laptop, streaming from one of the increasingly popular music services, or listening to an internet radio station on the other side of the globe, the NP30 will unleash the full potential of your favourite tracks, transcending your digital music into the full realm of hi-fi.
(Note: The name UuVol is a ‘twist’ on a translation of the word nebulous. Since the scope of Cambridge Audio’s network music players offer many differing benefits and support a plethora of services, it was felt that this was an apt association.)

Cambridge, UK. 21 September 2010 – Reciva.
Today heralds an exciting new era in Internet Radio with the launch of Reciva Remote for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. Exclusive to Reciva-based radios*, this wireless remote application gives users complete control over their device in a simple, yet beautifully designed interface. The app offers faster access to all radio functionality and can also be used as a media streamer between your home network and your radio. Using the enhanced UI (including Retina display) found on the Apple products users can now enjoy full colour station logos, album art and icon graphics, regardless of the display on the radio itself.
The remote app also offers consumers a cost effective way of making multi-room audio a reality. The app can control an unlimited number of Reciva-based radios, giving users the opportunity to rename their devices to whatever they choose – e.g. Kitchen, Dad’s Den, Bedroom etc – and then send the same (or even different) audio to every room of the house at the swipe of a finger!
Matt Shortt, Marketing Director at Reciva said “we realised pretty quickly that there was no point in reinventing the wheel by advising our brands to put an expensive full colour display on every radio in their range, especially when other devices already do it so much better. The current crop of colour screen Internet Radios are, quite frankly, not very good. We give consumers a rich user experience that allows them to explore the full range of services on our platform - whether that be streaming your music collection or setting up a new Pandora stream to play over dinner - all from the palm of your hand. Our new app makes using Internet Radios and Media Streamers a more hassle-free, and most importantly, much more enjoyable experience ” Matt went on to add “We recognise not everyone has an iPhone so we are not stopping at the Apple products. We hope to have more news in the coming months on Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile and RIM, amongst others”
Reciva Remote is available to download on the Apple App store here: Reciva Remote App and you can complement your Reciva-based listening even further by downloading our mobile radio app - Reciva iRadio - also available on the App Store here: Reciva iRadio App
